Wisdom Tooth Extractions Near You
The average person develops wisdom teeth during their teenage or early adult years. Although some people may never feel symptoms of their wisdom teeth growing in, others experience pain and discomfort. Typically, there is not enough room in the mouth to accommodate wisdom teeth, which can cause various oral issues.
Receiving wisdom tooth extractions near you is recommended when the wisdom teeth cannot properly erupt within the mouth. Wisdom teeth may grow in various angles and partially break through the gum tissue or remain buried entirely beneath the bone and gum tissue.

The Extraction Process
During a simple extraction, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb your tooth, jawbone, and gums that surround the area. You will feel pressure during the extraction. Do not worry, this is normal; it is caused by the process of firmly rocking the tooth to widen the socket for removal. You will not feel pain, as the anesthetic has numbed the nerves.
Sectioning a Tooth
In some cases, tooth removal near you will require sectioning. This common procedure is conducted when a tooth is anchored firmly in its socket, or the root is curved, and the socket is unable to expand enough for extraction. Your dentist will simply cut the tooth into sections and remove each section one at a time.
After Teeth Extractions
Once your dentist has extracted your tooth in Calgary, a blood clot must form. This will stop the bleeding to begin the healing process. Bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes immediately following the appointment. Place a second gauze pad and bite firmly for 30 minutes if the bleeding or oozing continues. You may be required to repeat this several times to staunch the flow of blood.
Once the blood clot forms, it is essential not to disturb or dislodge the clot. You must avoid rinsing vigorously, sucking on straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, or brushing your teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours’ post-extraction. These activities may dislodge or dissolve the clot and hinder the healing process. Be sure to limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours, as this increases blood pressure and may boost bleeding from the extraction site.
After the tooth is removed, you may experience pain or swelling. To minimize the swelling, place a cold compress on the area. Take pain medications as prescribed, typically swelling subsides after 48 hours.
Use pain medication and prescribed antibiotics as directed. Contact our office if the medication does not seem to be working. Be sure to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious, soft food on the day of the extraction. You can return to eating solid foods once you are comfortable.
After 24 hours, it is important to resume your normal dental routine, which should include brushing and flossing at least once per day. This will speed healing, and help you maintain a clean and fresh mouth. You should feel fine and return to your normal activities after a few days. Call our office in SE Calgary, McKenzie Towne, Calgary T2Z 3V8 immediately if you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling for 2 to 3 days or a reaction to the medication.
